Syracuse University Watson Hall Restrooms

Syracuse University, Syracuse, NY

2023-2024

As part of Syracuse University’s campus modernization program, our firm provided full mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection (MEP/FP) engineering design for the comprehensive renovation of Watson Hall’s communal bathroom facilities.

Watson Hall is a 162,000-square-foot mid-rise dormitory constructed in 1953–54, serving approximately 440 students. The project involved the demolition and replacement of 18 gang-style bathrooms, completed over two tightly scheduled 10-week summer construction periods in 2023 and 2024. In their place, we designed 94 private, single-occupant bathrooms with showers—substantially enhancing student privacy, functionality, and code compliance.

Each bathroom cluster was designed with a strong emphasis on accessibility, in alignment with the University’s Beyond Compliance initiative. This commitment ensures all newly constructed and renovated spaces exceed ADA requirements. Every cluster includes at least one accessible bathroom and shower unit, featuring a mix of roll-in and transfer-type showers to accommodate a wide range of user needs.

To mitigate construction risk and streamline installation, a full-scale bathroom cluster mockup was developed and constructed in our office’s warehouse prior to the first summer construction phase. This hands-on prototype allowed the construction team to resolve mechanical coordination and waterproofing details early, while giving the University an opportunity to review finishes and layout in advance of full implementation.

Despite the challenges of coordinating complex MEP/FP systems within an older structure and a compressed schedule, our integrated design approach supported a smooth construction process. The project was delivered on time, with a total construction cost of approximately $9 million.
